5 Pieces Of Advice For The Aspiring Online Entrepreneur

7 min read

Being an online entrepreneur is damn sure not as easy as most make it out to be. If you look at “products” that supposedly teach you how to make money online, most of them just repeat the same story:

“It’s easy, you can make money instantly, apply this secret system and start making money tomorrow”

Horse sh*t!

If you are new to online entrepreneurship and online business, let me be the first to tell you that no; it is not as easy as they make it out to be.

I wish I could say that though, as apparently “most people” fall for these types of scams, but I am here to deliver the truth; this ain’t an easy job.

However, I do have some pieces of advice for the aspiring online entrepreneur out there.

If you are a newbie at this, then these few tips of mine should help put things in perspective and show you what you can expect to face in the beginning of your business.

If you are a seasoned pro, then I am sure you would relate to these words of wisdom too.  If you are of an advanced level in online marketing, feel free to drop some knowledge done below in the comment section. I’d love to hear your tips.

Let’s get into it shall we?

*This post is not meant to “inspire you”, I’m not a self-development blogger. This post is all about getting you in the right mindset to win, please do not confuse the two.

Get Ready To Do It For A While

No matter how many times online products (like this one) promise you that you can make money instantly from the internet, know that it’s just a lie.

There is no way that you can “instantly” make money online (especially life-changing money).

It’s absolutely impossible. I know because I’ve tried and review most of these types of products and even with the best of them, I never managed to make any quick money.

Just know that if you want to become an online entrepreneur, it is going to take some time before you will make any money that is worth talking about.

I only had my first sale after months of working on my websites and it was a total of $0.87c.

How about that for “inspirational” huh?

But that 0.87c changed my life in such a way that I can’t even begin to explain. It showed me that money can in fact be made online, it’s juts going to take some time.

Did it get better? Well of course it did. Othewise I wouldn’t be sitting here writing this blog post. I now run 5 websites. Not all make money but I can assure you that it’s much more than $0.87c.

It just takes time.

I’ve put this piece of advice as the first one because even if you don’t make it till the end of this post, I want to be sure you leave here with that piece of knowledge.

Get it in your head NOW before we continue.

Nothing Is Ever “Complete” or “Perfect”

Another piece of imporant advice that I want to share with you is that nothing you do will ever be “officially done” or perfect.

Some of the students I mentor over at Wealthy Affiliate usually hold back from beginning their work because they want their first blog post to be perfect, or their site looks exactly how they imagined it to be, this is just not a good mentality to work with.

Let me expalin what I mean about that:

Whatever part of your business you want to work on, just know that it’s not perfect yet and probably it will never be.

Your work as an online entrpepreneur consist of many things, like:

  • Running and maintaining a blog,
  • Getting subscribers on your email list,
  • Increasing social media influence,
  • Get more traffic through search traffic,
  • Create visuals that go along with your content,
  • etc…

Just know that these items can never be “done” or even considered to be “perfect”.

Just becasue you’ve built a blog / website, it doesn’t mean you are done. It just means that you’ve taken a step in the right direction, by all means you are not “finished”.

You always have to keep adding more content regularly.

Just because you have 100 subscribers on your list, your work is not done yet either. You need to learn ways on how to increase email subscirbers, increase open rates, develop free giveaways for your list etc…

You can have 1000 blog posts on your blog and 10,000 subscribers on your email list, that does not mean you are done with your work either. There’s always room for improvement.

Always keep moving and work hard to put your business in a better position that it was yesterday.

Your Only Success Metric Is; $$

So how do you know if you are going well if you never actually ‘finish”, easy; just look at your income from your business.

You can have thousands of followers and thousands of traffic every motnh but if those numbers don’t equal to money, then something is not working right.

Which means you have to “keep working” and “keep improving” till you start making money.

If you ever reach your target income, then congratulations but still it doesn’t mean you can (or should) stop.

You can hire people to handle most of your tasks once you get to that point but that does not mean you can completely abandon your business. if you do that, you’re not going to have a business for much long.

You Will Make Money, Guaranteed.

Often times people give up (or never even try) because it seems impossible to them that they can actually make real money online.

I’m here to tell you that yes, you absolutely can make money as an online entrepreneur.

It all comes down to mastering these 4 simple steps:

  • Have a business idea.
  • Create your website.
  • Get traffic to it.
  • Make money.

If you follow the first 3 steps of that formula, then you are guaranteed the 4th one ( i.e make money).

Obviously it’s not an easy thing to do (otherwise everybody will do it too) but it is possible and people have done it in the past; so why not you?

Luckily there are free training programs you can use to learn how to master those 4 key principles. Take a look at either Fizzle.co or Wealthy Affiliate if you want to learn how to follow and master that formula.

Have A Daily Routine

The final tip I want to share with you is not life-changing but if applied properly, I can promise you (from experience) that it will change your life.

Just have a daily routine of your business.

Every day, whatever day it is; I am doing something that pushes my business forward.

Whether I’m writing a new post, researching some products to review or creating images that I can share on social media; I am working every single day on it!

My business is on my daily to-do list and honestly; it’s the most important part of my day.

I am writing this on Valentine’s Day and I do have a girlfriend haha. It’s just I make sure to work every-single-day.

The reason I got so focused in 2016 and had enough time and energy to start this blog you are reading, was because I spent some days in late December 2015 carefully planning and setting up my daily routine.

By having an action plan in place, I came out with swinging in 2016 and my business has thanked me for it.

As I’ve said, I’m writing this in February 2016 and by March 2016 (according to my data) I will matching my entire income of 2015.

I owe this to setting up that daily routine and I urge you right here to do the same now.

Simply set your business goals, reverse engineer the entire process and figure out what you have to do each and every day to get there.

I like this post because it relates to my beliefs. The internet is completely full of a bunch of crap products, systems, and activities all offering and promising quick riches almost overnight. To make it online, you have to understand that you cannot be a professional product buyer what being a lack of action taker. You have to be consistent at the fundamentals…the simple fundamentals that you have to do over and over and over again until you begin to see how things work and your hard work come together. It’s a never ending process, it’s a passion.

Thanks for this very helpful advice. Actually I just started my business six months ago and I am not seeing that much result yet. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?

On the other and, I agree with you that I should spent much time into my business in order to attain success. So where did you learn all of this? Did you go to a school or something?

Hey John. Most of my lessons came through the “try and fail” method but I would’ve rather had a proven system to follow from the get-go.

It was only once I found out about Wealthy Affiliate that things started to make sense. 😉

Thank you for your comment. Much appreicated.

I think the most important thing is consistency and not giving up. I was frustrated at one point because I wasn’t making money and I honestly wanted to quit.
But then I figured I am not making money because I am not consistent and I don’t put enough effort into my website. So I began doing it and now I am seeing a little increase in traffic and I’m sure some sales are bound to come my way soon

First step to making money is getting traffic. Do not focus on earning money right now, only focus on getting in readers. That is what matters and what will move the needle for you.

I see you’re a student of WA so I know you’re following the best training out there and I am sure you will eventually make it.

Keep in touch, I want to hear about your progress! 🙂

Hey Chris, this is encouraging to read because these are the situations that I am going through for the past few months in 2016. I’ve been doing affiliate marketing for 2 years now (feel like giving up many times but didn’t) and must admit that I am still at the steep learning curve.

Haven’t branch out much to do social marketing. Basically just keyword research, blogging and doing comment engagement. That’s enough to keep me busy the entire week while I juggle with a day job. It’s crazy that I sometimes work till 12 midnight while everyone is fast asleep.

I would like to see my effort pays off, but at the moment, it feels like I am fighting a solo battle.

Hey Cathy! Do not feel discouraged by time. I have been doing affiliate marektign for 5 years and I am still learning about it every single day.

It’s a work in progress os do not rush this, enjoy the ride and learn as much as you can (just know we’ll probably never know everything)! 🙂

      Thank you for your comment.

I think a lot of people end up losing faith with the process of internet marketing when they don’t make a dime over a 6 month period. This is sad as a website is rarely taken seriously by Google in this time span – you have to be looking at at least 100 posts and about 9 months on the clock to see decent traffic.
Internet marketing is hard, hard work and not for the faint hearted – patience and dedication is key!
