Is Affiliate Marketing A Scam? (& Other Common Questions)

Is affiliate marketing a legitimate way to make money online, or is it just another overly-hyped up “biz-op” peddled by shady internet marketing gurus to trick you into giving them money?

Well, I’ll be honest with you; I am one of those “gurus” who blog about how great affiliate marketing is, but I do this because I’ve seen first hand how amazing affiliate marketing can be for those who understand it and know how to do it.

For the past 7 years, I have been making money online (*mostly with affiliate marketing) and today I want to share my experiences with you and hopefully answer some of the most common questions beginners have when they first hear about affiliate marketing.

If this is something you’re considering to do either as a side-hustle or maybe even a full-time business, keep reading as I’m about to share with you all that I know about affiliate marketing and also (if you’re up for it) I have a free affiliate marketing training course down below.

Let’s get started with the most-commonly-asked question;

is affiliate marketing a scam

Is Affiliate Marketing A Scam?

While there are plenty of affiliate marketing scams you need to watch out for;

No affiliate marketing is not a scam.

Affiliate marketing is the business model where you promote products and services other people have created and then you pocket a small (or big) commission for your efforts.

It’s actually the people that promote affiliate marketing as a way to make money that make it sound like a scam.

  • “free easy money”
  • “quick riches”
  • “make thousands with this system”

Does the above sound familiar?

Since the start of affiliate marketing (back in the 90s) this was the common message and that’s because back then; it was actually possible to make money relatively quickly with affiliate marketing, however;

That’s no longer true – the industry has now matured and it’s now a legitimate marketing method used by companies such as Walmart, Amazon, Apple, Nike and many others to bring in new customers and increase sales.

So – just in case you’re wondering if affiliate marketing is a scam or not, if it was such a “dirty business”…. do you think all these major companies would be using it?

I doubt it.

What affiliate marketing provides is a way for us (the little guy) the opportunity to leverage the brand-power of these powerhouses and build ourselves a business which makes it a win-win both for us and for the companies we’re promoting.

I won’t go through exactly how to do affiliate marketing here (that’s not what the goal of this article is), but you can check out some of the linked guides below for more information:

Is Affiliate Marketing Easy?

Ha – this ties back into the “scammers‘ making affiliate marketing sound like an easy way to get rich.

In reality, affiliate marketing is not as easy as they make it out to be.

It’s not hard either, but – it does require you to know what you’re doing.

From the 7 years experience I have in this space and from helping others succeed with affiliate marketing, I can tell you that it all comes down to education.

If you go at it blindly, you will fail.

If you take your time to learn, you put in the work and you are willing to work for months before you start seeing any results worth bragging about, then affiliate marketing becomes easy.

It all comes down to creating content people want, and getting visitors/traffic to your website.

Once you have those firmly in place, affiliate marketing becomes easy.

You can see how long it will take you to make $1000 a month with affiliate marketing here (if you’re desperate to know).

Is Affiliate Marketing Worth It?

Yes – affiliate marketing is worth your time.

The annoying thing about it is that as I just said; it does take time to build up.

If you’re just starting out, you will need to be “working hard” without ever making any money, but once you get that traffic – then it immediately becomes very profitable and worth your time.

Once you have traffic, you have a business accessible by anyone anywhere in the world and you will be making money 24/7.

Today I find myself having 16 affiliate websites in my portfolio and even though I only actively work on 4 of them, most of those websites produce an income for me without me ever having to do any work on them.

They are just there, out in the ether of the world wide web producing cash each and every month.

That, to me, makes affiliate marketing worth and worth the few months you’d have to work “for free”.

One way to look at this would be;

Would you be willing to work for free for a year so you can live the rest of your life with a comfortable paycheck coming in every month?

That sounds like a good deal to me and if set up right, yes affiliate marketing can provide that for you (and more).

Is Affiliate Marketing Dead?

Is this 2010 all over again?

When I was starting out with affiliate marketing (circa 2010) there was this idea that affiliate marketing is dead and it won’t be long until the business model phases out and be replaced with something better.

Of course – they were wrong.

Not only did affiliate marketing continue from then on, but it has reached new heights.

Some argue (and I’d agree) that affiliate marketing is just getting started and it has a very bright future ahead of it.

This goes back to the argument above that it’s a win/win for everyone involved.

For as long as people keep buying things online and for as long as businesses want to keep getting customers for free – affiliate marketing will always be here.

Do not let some article that tells you affiliate marketing is dead hold you back from taking a chance on yourself and building a business that you can be proud of and that will eventually give you a life of freedom.

Is Affiliate Marketing Profitable?

Well, that would be some plot twist if I finished this off with “No, affiliate marketing is not profitable” wouldn’t it?

Of course, it’s profitable.

Do you think I will be writing this blog post if it wasn’t?

Do you think I would’ve been able to free myself and my girlfriend from the clutches of the 9-5 if it wasn’t for my affiliate profits?

YES – affiliate marketing makes money.

End of story.

(Just don’t expect to make money today with it).

Is Affiliate Marketing For Me?

The last question I will address is the “is affiliate marketing for me” question.

Even though it’s by far my favorite way to make money online, there are many ways to make money online besides affiliate marketing.

If this is something you should do is up to you, but – if you want to get started with affiliate marketing, understand these few things:

  • It does involve writing content.
  • It does involve learning additional skills.
  • It does involve struggles (just like any other business has).

Luckily for you, there are plenty of legitimate training courses that will teach all of the above and more to help you get started making money with affiliate marketing.

As I said earlier, if you go at this blindly, you will probably fail as there’s a lot that you need to learn but;

There are plenty of ways you can learn, which is what I’ll be ending this article with…

Learn Affiliate Marketing In A Scam-Free Environment

I wasn’t always convinced affiliate marketing works.

I first got my start making money online as a freelancer but I wanted something more; I wanted to stop trading my time for money and instead build a business that can make me money semi-passively which is how I discovered affiliate marketing.

Like a fool, I’ve spent years running around in circles thinking I’m doing things right when in fact, I was just clueless.

That is when I discovered Wealthy Affiliate, which is an affiliate marketing university that you can join – for free – right now.

The free membership plan gives you all you need to know to get started, but there’s also a premium-membership option which will unlock higher levels of training and strategies to help you build a better affiliate marketing business.

The premium membership goes for $47 a month, but you can try out your first month for just $19.

Up to 17th September 2020, I also have a $97 bonus for all those who go premium so if you are serious about this, you may want to check out the Affiliate Starter Pack page.

So…  Is Affiliate Marketing a Scam?

I hope this quick-post has shown you that no, affiliate marketing is not a scam and you most definitely can make (good) money with this method.

If I managed to convince one of you to start an affiliate marketing business (and help you become successful) with what I shared in this post, then I’ve done my job well.

I’ll leave you to it.
