When Will Your Blog Start Making Money? (Road To Profitability)

So you’ve read all the “blog income reports” out there, you’ve gone through the trouble of learning “how to start a blog” and today you find yourself with a blog, but no income.

What’s the problem!?

What went wrong?

When will your blog start making money?

Good news – it’s going just as it’s supposed to.

Many bloggers come into the scene expecting to start making money asap but the truth is, it usually takes some time before you really start seeing some good income.

Today, I want to share with you a few thoughts (from my own experiences) as to how long it takes to make money blogging.

I’ve covered this in the past already, but it’s time for a 2020-update and that’s what today’s post is about.

Let’s get started…

Can you still make money blogging in 2020?

With so many other platforms (such as YouTube, Instagram, etc) is it still worth making the effort to create high-quality written content to build yourself a following and a readership?

The answer is YES!

I would not be here writing this post for you if I thought blogging was dead. It’s not.

For as long as there is an internet out there, people will still want to read information and the best way to present information online is through a blog.

I can tell you about the benefits of having your own blog all day long, but one thing I want you to realize is that when you own a blog;

You own your “platform”. You own a piece of the “world-wide-web”.

There are many who use Instagram or Facebook as a “blogging platform”. Others prefer “vlogging” on YouTube.

Instagram and YouTube are not your platforms. You can easily get banned from these platforms (we’re seeing that happen a lot lately).

With a blog, you can’t ever get banned or removed – and as long as you keep working on your blog – you have a way of making money online (if that’s what you’re looking to do).

Can You Still Make Money Blogging in 2020?

Again – YES.

You make money from a blog (or any other sort of business) when you have people visiting your blog.

As long as your blog stays online, and you keep working on it, you can – and will be – making money from your blog.

I have a list of 21 ways you can make money blogging here and I will share some other ways down below – but first, I want to answer the main question of this article and that is;

When Will Your Blogging Start Making Money?

This is a tricky question, and one I don’t think many beginner bloggers like to hear the answer to.

Your blog will start making money when you have two things, and the more you have of them, the better:

  • Traffic and
  • An offer.

Traffic is what will make you money so unless you have the traffic coming in, you could have the best blog in the world, it would still not make any money.

As for how much traffic you need to make money, you’d be surprised to know that you don’t really need that much.

My new blog in my profitable niche site case study makes about $300 a month, and that’s just from 200+ visitors a day, which is not bad.

If I had to put a number on it, I would say you are going to need to have at least 100 people a day visiting your website before you start making any money.

The more the better of course, but with 100 people a day, or 3000 people a month, you should be making some money.

The other thing you need is an offer, and this would be something you’re selling through your own blog. It can be:

  • An affiliate product, which pays you a commission on each sale
  • Your own product, that you get to keep 100% of the revenue from – or;
  • Banner Ads (which can also make you a decent income with not-that-much traffic.

Let’s dig into each one to see how quickly your blog can start making money with each method.

Affiliate Marketing:

Let’s say you get 100 people a day to your website, and you sell an affiliate product that earns you a $20 commission on each sale.

If you can convert 0.5% of those 100 visitors, you are looking at about $20 per day – or $300 a month.

MarketingDiscounts.com offers a free affiliate earnings calculator which you can use to test out some numbers.

If you have a blog already, fill out your “daily page impression” and also what you are promoting and keep playing with it till you find how much traffic you need to get to your blog, for it to start making as much money as you’d like it to.

If you’re brand new to affiliate marketing, I have a course down below that will teach you all you need to know about it, but you can also check out my “getting started with affiliate marketing” guide to get a quick understanding of what it is and how it works.

Your Own Product:

The same rules apply as above if instead of having an affiliate offer, you have your own product that you promote.

This can be anything you want (here’s a list of 100 great product ideas you can create and sell).

The good thing about this is that you keep 100% of your earnings, as opposed to affiliate marketing where you just get an affiliate commission.

Banner Ads:

This is a tricky one because banner ads do not pay as well as selling a product.

What you’re doing here is placing ads on your website and in your content and whenever a reader clicks on one of the banners, you get paid a few cents.

Needless to say, you are going to need a lot of traffic to be able to make some decent income with this method.

Ideally – you would want to have 10,000 pageviews a month so you can apply to some premium ad networks such as Ezoic.

This will pay you about $8 to $10 per thousand page views so if you get 10,000 pageviews a month, you’re looking at about $100 in monthly revenue.

If you join MediaVine (once you have 25,000 sessions a month) you can earn about $15 per thousand impressions so, at that level, you’re looking at about $450 a month.

Of course, all methods above come down to how much traffic you can get to your blog.

The more traffic = the more money you will be making from your blog.

I guess the question is now;

How can you get as much traffic to your blog as soon as possible?

Here’s a great guide covering 13 tricks and tips to help you get traffic to your blog fast.

However, remember that traffic does take time to build. It’s not something you get in a day or two.

On average, I would say you are going to need 6 to 8 months before you start seeing some decent traffic and some decent income.

Want to know how much traffic you need to make $1000 per month? I do my best to break down the math behind that goal on this guide here.
